The modern conception is trending further and further away from this. Without existing conditions or predispositions, heavy lifting, combined with proper cardio and a decent diet, is proving to be a pretty solid lifestyle. There's a recent study showing that muscle mass is a good indicator of longevity.
A lot of the cardiac issues attributed to weight lifting involved routines with nearly no cardio exercise and white fish/chicken based diets lacking in fatty acids/aminos vital for cardiovascular health.
Obviously, there are exceptions, that's just life. Heck, it's not uncommon to hear of ultra-marathon runners, people in absolute peak physical condition, just dropping dead one day.
Besides, we've all got to go one day....
