Question Clutch fork movement effort?

Finally got to investigating my grabby clutch which is most pronounced in 1st and reverse. Only very careful release of the pedal avoids a clunky engagement.

The pedal cluster has been rebuilt and the clutch cable looks pretty new and has no excessive friction. With 57k original miles, I figured it might still have the original rubber-centered clutch plate notorious for deteriorating

I split the engine/tranny this afternoon and it's a spring-center Sachs clutch, so it has been replaced and seems unlikely to be the cause. The clutch fork turns smoothly but with some effort - like rolling up a manual car window that hasn't been used in a while. Should the fork turn more freely?
