Wagons still have the family image from the 60s. As pointed out above the evolution of what's hip after that is Minivan - Large SUV - Crossover/Compact SUV. Maybe it will circle back to the wagon!?
I'd drive one but don't have a need. A hatchback is more up my alley. And I agree, the hatchback definitely is becoming more popular over a sedan.
In Europe the Jetta was non existant for many years. A small sedan a la Jetta, Corolla etc. is a grampsmobile over there. A wagon really is most popular in Europe as a traveling salesman vehicle, then as a family vehicle. And have you been to Europe recently? The compact SUVs are becoming very popular there now too ...
