Rebuilding a Rebuilt Motor

Hi guys,

I am dealing with my 2L rebuilt motor that I bought last year. I installed in my car once but it did not start. The cranking was slow and ended up seizing up with some metal squeaking noise. One mistake I can think of is I filled the filter with oil prior to the start according to the book "How to Rebuild Your VW Air Cooled Engine" by Tom Wilson(p.149). However I later acknowledged that it's a NO-NO. (914World.com - The fastest growing online 914 community!). It's funny that I could now turn the crank easily with my hand.

Anyways I decided to redo it myself. Here are some photos from yesterday. I was first surprised to see how dry they're. There is no oil or lube around the rings and pins. Also, rebuilder did not apply sealer between the case and cylinders mating surfaces. Is that OK?

Please feel free to leave your comment.

Thanks in advance,

BW
