On the left windshield (A) pillar there should be a riveted plate with the VIN if it is a North American model.
When you open the left door, there may be a decal below the striker plate with the VIN & date of manufacture punched out. On the hinge post there should be the paint code plate.
When you open the front trunk there should be a riveted plate with the VIN & model # (the manufacturer plate) on the right side of the slam panel. Under the trunk floor carpet the primary body VIN will be stamped on the sheet metal between the gas tank and the heater compartment lid (smuggler's box); very early 911's also have the manufacturer plate located here.
When you open the engine lid, look for the engine serial # on the right side support for the fan housing. Early aluminum case engines have the serial facing the rear, while the mag cases have it facing the right side. Just beyond the serial # on the horizontal surface of the case will be the engine type #; a build # will be located underneath the type # on the 1969 and earlier cases. These #'s are missing on replacement cases.
The transmission #'s are located on the bottom ribs of the main case; they are so low as to get scraped off on some cases. Look for both the type # and serial #.
