1972 911T targa yard find

Hi all,

So I happened down a dirt road today and low and behold I find a 1972 911T sitting in a guys yard at the end of his driveway. He comes out and says its for sale.

Update: I've bought the car and will post more once I've decided on next move.

Undercarriage has been getting moist, and it's a targa so look hard at the floorboard and the usual places.
What it's worth is dependent on what you want or need.

If you're looking to sell at retail, then factor in a strip and paint job, plus other things you find, and work backwards. Get pricing info from Haggertys.

If you're just wanting one to keep then your view can be longer.

Finally, go over there with $25G in cash, and see if he has the title. If so, ask him what he wants. Never name your price first. If he says $15 hem a little bit, ask if he's firm, and then take whatever he says and give him the cash. Other than that, you have a max number based on your research and try negotiating down to, or as far under that number as you can.

Speed and CASH will get it done. Have a flatbed standing by. Or take a trailer and park it around the corner.

Buy it!

Obviously depends on condition but I agree with others, somewhere in/around $20k. But you never know what is in his mind until you get him to name a price. See my thread from unsolicited offer to buy my '69 yesterday. Also, look at Hemmings and Excellence price values. Likewise, never hurts to look at completed auctions on eBay.

Good Luck!

Matching #'s help needed!

Okay so after a couple of hours of trying to find out how to confirm a matching number 1972 porsche 911t targa I am totally confused. I've read too many posts perhaps... Could anyone tell me exactly what numbers to check and where they would be located? I'd also like to confirm the original paint which I believe to be Emerald Green, where do I find that number on the car

The paint code is on a plate on the drivers door jam.

Vin will be on a pmate in front trunk, stamped into chassis next to gas tank and on another plate under driver side windshield.

Engine type and serial number are on right side of crankcase under fan housing. One number is vertical and one horizontal.

On the left windshield (A) pillar there should be a riveted plate with the VIN if it is a North American model.
When you open the left door, there may be a decal below the striker plate with the VIN & date of manufacture punched out. On the hinge post there should be the paint code plate.
When you open the front trunk there should be a riveted plate with the VIN & model # (the manufacturer plate) on the right side of the slam panel. Under the trunk floor carpet the primary body VIN will be stamped on the sheet metal between the gas tank and the heater compartment lid (smuggler's box); very early 911's also have the manufacturer plate located here.
When you open the engine lid, look for the engine serial # on the right side support for the fan housing. Early aluminum case engines have the serial facing the rear, while the mag cases have it facing the right side. Just beyond the serial # on the horizontal surface of the case will be the engine type #; a build # will be located underneath the type # on the 1969 and earlier cases. These #'s are missing on replacement cases.
The transmission #'s are located on the bottom ribs of the main case; they are so low as to get scraped off on some cases. Look for both the type # and serial #.

You fiddled with it for 2 days. By the time you research all the questions you have asked, you are either going to drive the price up or you're going to lose it to a bidding war..
It's a 73, so it's MFI. Lots of MFI was replaced in the era with Webers but if it's MFI it could also be an E or S engine.
What difference does the color make and why would you expect original paint on a 44 year old car? You either buy it or pass on it as you'll be Sorting the problems later and spending to match what you already spent.

I bought the car as pointed out.

All,

Relax it's mine already, per my updated first post.

To those who actually offered advice on the questions I was asking, Thank You! For the rest, if you don't have anything constructive and informative to add please don't post. I'm not going to do anything foolish and I'm not going to sell the car or start working on the car until I know everything about it.

More to come in a week or so.

Chassis number locations on a US car, top to bottom: on passenger side of trunk latch panel; stamped in the trunk floor, rear of passenger side of the fuel tank; inside of left A pillar, viewed through the windshield; driver's door jamb, at rear of door.

Paint code number location, on driver's door jamb, in the front. Paint color will be a 3 digit code, followed by two more numbers. 225 is the code for Emerald Green. I don't think the car is that color; I'd guess it is Irish Green, 213.

Enjoy the research,

JR
