I guess I missed the significance of the "hypothetically" in your first post.
Now I get it.
Assume you are shopping for a $40-45k car.
Whether you pay more or less probably depends on your patience, willingness to compromise, and/or risk tolerance.
Since you are talking about hypotheticals, some things that add value to a car may have less relevance to you. A car with a day 1 service record is going to bring a premium because many buyers value it -- but frankly, it matters little to how good a car it is now. A solid maintenance record going back 5-10 years that shows replacement of wear & age-related parts is more important than what the original owner did to the car 30 years ago.
A car like that s easier to find, and therefore a bit cheaper.
