And it was off all afternoon Wednesday and the temps in the house never got above 74°F despite it getting up to 88°F outside. From all that I am thinking doing the temp setback thing is a waste for my house. As the temps would not really rise enough to save any money, and would take such a long time to bring it back down to the set temp would end up costing more than just letting the system maintain one temp.

That is how the A/C is, will have to recheck the temp change times when we switch over to winter heat mode.
Since you are home most of the time temp setbacks likely will not help you much. Now that Mrs. Carrera is home most of the time the daytime temp is left alone. In the AC months the temps is raised in the evenings when we go to bed. We have a ceiling fan and that keeps us nice and cool. The AC thermostat drops the temp and kicks on 30 minutes before the alarm and is back down to normal in short order.

My electric bill is averaged and the same for 12 months of the year. Every 12 months they change the price a little depending on my usage. It is automatically drafted from my account. For some reason I love getting the paper copy of the bill in the mail with a big DO NOT PAY THIS BILL on the total due line. I guess I remember all to well the bad old days when I wondered how I was going to pay the bills every month. I don't miss that at all.
