My boxster sounds like it swallowed a bunch of crickets!

Ok so maybe it's not that bad, but i have this annoying chirping sound at idle. At first I thought it was the acc. drive belt. Changed it, no difference. Then I thought it could have been an idler pulley. Had that checked, and they are fine. In fact, the shop I took it to said he couldn't hear any noise.
If I am in an enclosed place, or next to another car, top up or down, and the engine warm, it drives me nuts. It's not rythmic, and it changed pitch constantly. once I step on the gas, it goes away. Not affected by putting on the AC, nor loading the alternator!
Just sounds like a damned cricket!!!!!
Any ideas?
