My boxster sounds like it swallowed a bunch of crickets!
Ok so maybe it's not that bad, but i have this annoying chirping sound at idle. At first I thought it was the acc. drive belt. Changed it, no difference. Then I thought it could have been an idler pulley. Had that checked, and they are fine. In fact, the shop I took it to said he couldn't hear any noise.
If I am in an enclosed place, or next to another car, top up or down, and the engine warm, it drives me nuts. It's not rythmic, and it changed pitch constantly. once I step on the gas, it goes away. Not affected by putting on the AC, nor loading the alternator! Just sounds like a damned cricket!!!!! Any ideas?

So this is while moving at speed??
Bearing, CV joint?

Does it change with rpm when not moving? Possibly loose spark plug or idler pulley, ps pump.
Does it change with wheel rotation? Possibly rubbing brake rotor shield, pinion bearing, cv joint. Clutch in or out? Process of elimination.

This sound is when idling. It's a tip, so no clutch. moving the steering wheel has no effect. Stationary, so the CV and Axle bearing is out, along with rotor shield. It seems to go away when I'm off idle. But that may just be the added engine noise. I'm sort of leaning towards the loose plug theory, as this started when I had the spark plug o-rings replaced. My guess is the plugs had to come out for that. It fades in and out. at different pitches. I'm actually wondering if it might be a vacuum leak.

my guess: loose spark plug or bad drive belt tension rollers

Get a stethoscope and go hunting... An failing AOS can also create whistling type sounds as it sucks and crushes the oil fill pipe. Try removing the oil cap when the engine is idling. Much vacuum there? Did the noise change?
Cheers

Remove the accessory belt temporarily. Start the engine and run for a few seconds with no belt in your 'confined space'.
If the noise is gone, suspect wrong spec belt/misaligned pulleys or worn pulley bearings. It is easy to overlook misaligned pulleys. Just put a straight edge across adjacent pulleys and measure the gap. To check for worn bearings, try to rock the pulley at 12/6 o'clock. I had both problems. You can 'hack'/test by spraying Belt Grip

Yep, loose plug is common for this symptom. Rollers or water pump can also sound similar.
