I have a friend who owns a beautiful 4 bedroom house in Puerto Los Cabos. He stays there 1/4 of the year and we visit often. It's beautiful and safe. They have a great restaurant and beach-side pool area. Most of the houses are available for short term rental, including my buddy's. It's probably too much for just one couple, but there are condos by the marina that are rentals as well.
I've NEVER had a problem or felt unsafe in Los Cabos or Cabo San Lucas. Don't go into back alleys looking for drugs, and don't get drunk and treat local women like hookers, and you'll be fine. It's stupidity that get's you in trouble there.
Los Cabo has great snorkeling tours, fantastic whale watching in February, kayak fishing tours right offshore for dorado (dolphin), and several very nice ocean front golf courses, including Puerto Los Cabos.
