Los Cabos for vacation?
I am thinking of a vacation to Los Cabos in February and wondered if any west coasters had any comments that would help planning this trip, or change my mind.
This is a biggie, 40th anniversary. We tried San Diego in November, but unfortunately had to return after 48 hours for a family health emergency. Now it's time to finish the trip, but San Diego could be cooler during February, hence my thought about Cabo. We need to know it is safe, and if so, nice places for an early 60's couple to stay. Not looking for absolute top end, but higher end accommodation or areas where a condo rental might work. We are also interested in any comments regarding things to see/do and places to eat. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Have you considered Caribbean or Hawaii?
I'm pretty adventurous and robust, as a kid used to run down to Mexico to party and bring back a case of tequila... but reports I'm hearing out of Mexico lately seem no bueno. That and it is no longer the travel bargain it used to be... I went on a Mexico cruise a few years back... beautiful country but the poverty is a bit depressing when you are trying enjoy a vacation. But some people still love it. YMMV

I have a friend who owns a beautiful 4 bedroom house in Puerto Los Cabos. He stays there 1/4 of the year and we visit often. It's beautiful and safe. They have a great restaurant and beach-side pool area. Most of the houses are available for short term rental, including my buddy's. It's probably too much for just one couple, but there are condos by the marina that are rentals as well.
I've NEVER had a problem or felt unsafe in Los Cabos or Cabo San Lucas. Don't go into back alleys looking for drugs, and don't get drunk and treat local women like hookers, and you'll be fine. It's stupidity that get's you in trouble there. Los Cabo has great snorkeling tours, fantastic whale watching in February, kayak fishing tours right offshore for dorado (dolphin), and several very nice ocean front golf courses, including Puerto Los Cabos. IF we go to Mexico anymore it's been Loreto, a smaller town, quieter, right on the water with fishing and plenty of smaller places to eat and drink. Safer and quieter, cheaper. The airport is about four miles out of town. Great little shopping area with cobblestone streets. The oldest mission in the Californias with another very old one up in the hills.

One nice thing about Cabo is the shorter flight time to get there. From where do you originate? John Wayne (Santa Ana/Orange County) has a non-stop Southwest Airlines flight that takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. When we traveled there not too long ago, that was a big determining factor.
After a lot of online investigating, I determined that Cabo was safe. As it turns out, we felt completely safe and absolutely loved every Mexican National we came into contact with once we got past all the airport peddler's. We stayed at Hacienda Del Mar which is on the corridor about half way between Los Cabos and Cabo San Lucas. We very much enjoyed HDR, and while the hotel, beach, and pool area were great, I really thought their employees and the food were the best part of the trip. There is a very nice golf course adjacent to the hotel, however, it is rather pricey. HDR, being on the corridor, is a little isolated, but is a ten minute drive from Cabo if you deem it necessary for activities or nightlife. We were content to just lay by the pool or on the beach while waiters brought us food and drink and only drove to Cabo, once, to rent a watercraft. If you consider HDR, you may want to rent a timeshare from an existing owner instead of booking a hotel room. There are a number of very nice hotels in Cabo to consider, however, they may be inhabited by a younger, more lively crowd if that at all bothers you. Quite frankly, we can't wait to go back!! Cheers! |

We spent a vaca (early Jan) in Cabo San Lucas once. It was very pretty, and enjoyable if you are into the beach thing. We'd also done Puerto Vallarta (technically, Nuevo Vallarta which is next door). Comparing the 2, Cabo seemed more like a Mexican extension of California. Many/most of the vehicles are the same thing that you would see in the US, most places take US$, even in town. We were able to hook up some interesting things to do through the resort that we stayed in.
Puerto Vallarta was also good, but seemed a bit more Mexican than Cabo. A place that we visited while we were staying in Puerto Vallarta that I think would be a much better place to go was Sayulita. Granted, it's probably been 10 years since we were there, so it's probably changed. This is what Wikipedia has to say about it. Quote:

Had my iPhone stolen by a server on new years eve in Rocky Point. Received a nasty concussion from the bouncers when I made a stink about it. Was an American owned bar/restaurant off the beach...
It's too uncivilized for me to return. Corruption, poverty, and the sad/hungry faces is too much.

It's perfectly safe,
It might be a little colder than you think. Most people prefer Los Cabos to Cabo San Lucas, if you want to walk on the beach. There's tons of great stuff on VRBO.com in both towns! You might also try Sayulita just north of Puerto Vallarta, And Loreto is really cool, as Dean Mentioned. No "resort vibe" to be had anywhere near there.
