I did mine cold. Cut the wire, use a good quality socket that fits properly.
I guess it is physically possible to do it on a hot engine but that sounds like a great way to have some new burn scars.
I made a tool to install the new one. Just a little grinder work and Dremel work. Look around on the other threads on CHT removal. A picture of the tool is worth a ton of typing. Easy to make the tool.
