The issue started when they enabled the volume buttons to take the phone, iPhone 5. If you were use the front button to take pictures the natural thing would be to rotate the phone counter clockwise so you could still use your thumb on the button. However, that puts the volume buttons on the bottom.
There is exif data embedded in the photo data itself that tells the program the correct orientation of the photo, but it seem some software does not recognize this data and displays the data in a default manner displaying photos taken with the camera upside down, well, upside down.
Thats all I know, and I have been known to be wrong before though I don't enjoy admitting it.
