What oil do you run?
Last June I bought my 1978 930 from a family friend that had been restoring it since 2005. Car was resprayed, new door window frames, rebuilt dash, new window seals, new gas tank. In 2007 engine was rebuilt with new valves. The engine and transmission are still out of the car and I have replaced all rubber fuel lines and awaiting complete fuel distributor and WUR rebuild. The car was a driver as it as 106k miles on it.
I think I am going to run Kendall 20w50 GT1 competition. I feel like using a synthetic would be a waste as the car will be a weekend warrior during summer months in Colorado. I was hoping to get some input on what oils you run? ![]()

AMSOIL 20/50 (High Zinc) for the last 110K miles, every 5K, currently at around 140K miles.

Can of worms, OPENED.
I plan to run Valvoline VR1 20-50 non synthetic in the summer, and some kind of synthetic in the winter. |

I ran non synth 20w50 gt1 in my sc, but got coking in 930. Now I use M1 15w50 and no issues. It’s cheap at Walmart, $28 for 5 qt. Used to be $21…
Edit: not saying M1 15w50 is right or best or anything, just what I’m happy with. I’d need a reason to switch. Last edited by zakthor; 01-23-2022 at 05:01 PM.. |

I use a concoction similar to Eddie Bello.
20W50 (in my case Castrol GTX) Redline Zinc Additive Lucas Oil treatment (1Qt)

I'm n the VR1 dinosaur oil crowd because of its high zinc content....no other reason. I'm happy with it; which leads to another question. When people say they're "happy" with an oil, what defines happy? Based on what metrics? I don't imagine many of us are oil engineers. Happy because the engine is still going round and round, no turbo coking, or "no issues"....whatever that means?
Every time someone surfaces this age old question, it gives me pause to contemplate how oil can make a person happy. Carry on friends!

I'm using Liqui-Moly classic motor oil 20W-50 for both of my 911s. Very happy with it.

I run Amsoil DOMINATOR 15W-50 Racing Oil which is heavily fortified with zinc and phosphorus. It might be an overkill but I also add REV X racing oil additive.

I like having a synthetic in a turbo-motored car. From the super high heat of the turbo, I want to avoid coking. Like others, I run Mobil 1 15w-50. I use that viscosity blend because it has the higher zinc levels that our motors need. It's also relatively cheap and easy to find.
I've used the VR-1 in the past, but the variety available locally was the non-synthetic version, and now I can't find it reliably anyway. I've also used Brad Penn 20w-50 in the past. I don't think it's a full synthetic. But it's what my indy mechanic uses. I figure they rebuild a lot more motors than I do, so if they're good with it, then I'm willing to use it, too. However, I can get Mobil 1 shipped to my door for less than $60 for 10 quarts from Walmart, whereas I have to go over to my mechanic to buy the Brad Penn. I'd also be willing to buy other brands,.like the M1 V-twin stuff, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Driven, etc that are touted on the Ultimate Oil Thread over on the technical forum, but again those are harder to find than the M1 15w-50.
