How hard do you drive your 930 daily?

For most of my classic cars, I'm on the gas pretty hard most of the time and the 930 is no exception. The 930 is my only higher hp big turbo'd car though... I drive it pretty much daily. How hard are they to break?

I drive mine very hard. Over 80k miles on the chassis and 3k miles on the rebuilt engine and transmission. Porsche didn't build these things to sit in a garage and only be driven by old women going to church.

I go into the "boost zone" everytime I drive mine no matter how short the trip is. The main concern is to keep the body in one piece, not the engine.

If I'm not mistaken, the owners manual says "thou shall open the waste gate everytime you drive". Probably just to blow out any condensation that could eventually cause a WG malfunction. That's what I tell the officer anyway.

These are designed and built to be driven hard / often and thrive on it

Only way you're gonna bork things:

- over rev
- over boost
- out of tune - too much timing / not enough fuel
- busted head stud - don't want to beat on an engine with that

stay within the design parameters and beat away, good sir!

and yes Mark, the owner's manual does in fact state exactly such - yes, keeps the WG from seizing from condensation / oxidation

Anytime I venture to town on a beverage run I look for a quarter mile of free space and just smash her to the floor until the WG opens. The problem with these tall geared 4 speeds is that that can result in 50 mph. Damn the people at the crosswalks and their little dog too!
Wellll...OK, that's a bit of a stretch but hey.

Somehow I find a few "on-ramps" during every drive. I feel a need to check boost gauge operation on every drive.

I drive mine every weekend for at least 45 minutes. I have a route where I can get my foot in it pretty good up to redline in 1st and second. It has been problem free in the 10 years I've owned it...Also about 5 2000 mile road trips.

160k miles, original internals, redline first and second every time I drive it several days each week, and on trips.

Years ago there was a pic out of one of the owners manuals that stated. The WG needs to be exercised. Take your car over 5k to do that. Or something along those lines

Yep. I try to follow the Porsche rulebook. It's been years since I last read my owners manual.

I'll keep the page dog eared, then I can quickly show it to the cops when they pull me over

but officer, it says right here....

The 8 main bearings and stumpy rods tell me they are stouter than most engines ever made pre-2000’s.

I’ve seen 5 main bearing, long skinny rod V8’s take massive hp and tq and RPM.

By design, they’re very tough IMO straight from Porsche.
