Turbo Front Wheel Bearing Access
I was checking my 1987 front suspension a while back and had the front jacked up yanking and twisting. I was checking for any slop in the suspension and tie rods. I noticed that the right front wheel had a little extra play in the front wheel bearings. Figured I would replace the bearings and seal when I repacked them. Interesting enough, the dust cap is completely recessed in the adapter and not easily removed. I also noticed that it has a spot welded threaded bung or boss in the center. How do you guys remove the cap? I did a query on the net for a tool and didn't come up with one. I was thinking of making a puller out of C channel and a 8 MM stud and bolt to screw in the bung and pull it out... Like a VW oil pump puller for those of you who have seen one. Is there a tool available?
Thanks Bob |

Slidehammer. Some guys made their own out of studding and a heavy weight.

You can rent(borrow) a slidehammer kit from Autozone for free. If you get a bolt size that fits in the cap, you can rig up the hammer to pull it out.

Do a search on the 911 forum, this has been discussed a few times as I discoverd as well. I did mine a little over a year ago and made my own tool for $8.

Nathan, Doug and Mark,
I had no idea this has been a thorn for so long. I thought someone would say "Hey Bob there is a $10 tool for that" ..What does Porsche do? If that threaded bung has a history of coming off????I think when I do get them off I will drill a concentric hole and install a class 8 bolt with the threaded shank facing outboard and make a puller from C channel like I said earlier. The slidehammer is not a good method because it relies on a shock method which that bung and its attachment process has a history of failure.. I think I will design a puller and sell them. Do you think they would sell for $10-15 if they worked? A thinner dust cap with a firm attachment device....Hummm! I bet VW makes a cheap dust cap that would fit and be modified? Thinking out loud! Thanks Bob

Bob, The tool I made was a puller type. It was basically a threaded rod with large washers and a steel plate. As I tightened the end nut onton the plate (supported by the lug nuts) the dust cap pops off.
