Canepa which helped bring the 959 to the US and has worked on or sold literally dozens of 959s has experience converting the 959 Denloc wheels to use conventional tires. I don't know exactly what's involved in the conversion, e.g. do they modify the wheel lip somehow or what.
Again it may be ok to run conventional tires on the RUFs designed for Denlocs as others have suggested, I don't have direct experience. But it's probably also possible to have these converted by Canepa or others similar to the 959 wheels.

My factory E36 M3 wheels had this type of bead lock also.

Since Herr Ruf himself said it wasn't a problem, I don't see why modifying a Ruf Denloc wheel would be useful. It is merely an extra safety item built into the wheel that isn't utilized with regular bead tires. Isn't that clear enough?
Remember: The ONLY reason was to keep your tires from going completely flat if you had a puncture at very high speeds. If you are concerned about that buy regular run flat tires. If Mr. Canepa has a particular reason to modify these type wheels, other than extreme aesthetics, [and I am well aware that a lot of his customer base is obsessed with that] I would love to hear a no nonsense explanation as to why it is necessary. But, really, I have been playing with Ruf and Denloc longer than he has and already discussed it with the original source. If you guys want to spend your time going over and over this old subject...and throw away money modifying old Ruf Dunlocs, have a ball. Me? I'm happy with the sets that I have and I stopped paying attention to which were or weren't Denloc a long time ago. See ya! |
