Oh my God!!! I would give my left nut to drive one of those. But too many wizz-bang features for your average back yard 930 mechanic to deal with.

Nice mooney, thanks for posting! Great explanation of the new technology.
However while watching that vid, I kept waiting for a 930 to do a drive by in full after-burn mode

Actually a couple more than 33 years....Went to the Earl's Court Motor Show in London, fall 1974, and was blown away by the red turbo Carrera with red and black plaid interior !
It shared the limelight with the Martini turbo RSR that "mowed the lawn" a few weeks earlier at Brands Hatch. (note to self: scan old slides) ____________ Jim Mocca Brown 930 |

The styling of the car is so bland and derivative. The car looks good directly from the side and that is it. The Cabrio actually looks better but same wussy front end. The only thing interesting IMO is the technology.
I find myself thinking why don't they just give the car more power than having some funky BS sport chrono overboost for a 'few seconds'. The new Porsche models across the board are starting to look like a perfect mix of all the most bland styling aspects of water cooled Porsches. Like they only have bland stuff left in the parts bin anymore. |

BTW, no Porsche would every be considered a clunker. The govt would laugh at you and deny the $4500 rebate.

meh. I had a 997 turbo, sold it about 6 months, its too heavy, too soft, too GTish and the rev limiter cuts in too soon. I still have my 930. now the 997 gt3rs, thats everything a new 911 should be. throw a big single turbo on it and tell the new owners good luck. that would be the great 930's decendant.

so what will these cars be in 20-25 years? Will people like us be buyers? My 930 is basic and crude, but easily wrenched on by me without the aid of $1million dollars worth of diagnostic hardware. Will you be able to order a new magnetically controlled engine mount when it springs a leak? Todays car seem to be built for the short term. I don't think we'll see 2010 cars in 2040.... Maybe thats their master plan? Make people buy new cars every few years? My 930's carbon footprint is nothing compared to what we'll be dealing with in todays cars, And the Gov. is feeding the fire.

Which is what drives people like us, keeping the 930's alive.

i was at the drag strip last night with some friends. i made a pass in my car just for fun and there was a new GT3 making some runs. I went 14.30 @ 110.42mph and he was running in the 12.8 range @ 113mph. He was obviously launching harder than i was but it was nice to see the old 930 held it's own in the speed department.

110 trap speed is a 12 sec car, if you abuse her on the launch. I find joy in showing new turbos who their daddy is. I've heard stories from my friends at foreign cars about some of their customers coming back to them upset that their new f car or p car just got beat by an old yellow 911. makes me smile every time.

motor
Anyone know if they are moving to a common 997 engine block? I'm assuming that since they are going to direct injection that they will be moving away from the tried and trusted split case motor used on every racing porsche! Don't want to sound like a snob but seems like the new wet sump ("integrated dry sump") motors are very un-porsche like.

The DFI 9AI engines are not the same as the M96 motors. No intermediate shaft, stronger, simpler design, etc. The 9A1 is starting off much better. We will see about reliability in the coming years.
So, I suppose the next GT2 will also use the 9A1?
