body now on it's way to bare metal

found a strange hole in middle of the roof! presumably from a previous aerial?

amount of thick crappy paint on the underside of the bonnet is amazing

a rare glimpse of her original colour?

a visit to the engine shop always cheers me up though

and an enormous thank you to Vincent Hill who i purchased an early 3.0 tail and rubber from. he was very patient in the face of gross stupidity buy the shipping company but he was tireless and got it all sorted and i now have the early tail that i have been searching for for so long!

Wow, you are going all the way with that one!

Any idea who made the injector blocks and fuel rails?

i'm sorry, i don't know. the car had ford edis 6 / megasquirt EFi when i bought it and the previous owner knew nothing about it either!

when i first had it the nuts holding the fuel rails on could only be held on by about 1.5 threads as the bolts weren't long enough. so i was perpetually scared of them coming off and the car going up in flames!

we have since fitted longer bolts so i can get nylon nuts properly fitted.

no update for a while, with the engine compete the bodywork has been a slow and painful process! luckily there appears to now be light at the end of the tunnel, got the sienna metallic paint (sorry to all those you pleaded with me not to paint it in it's original colour!) on the bonnet and front wings.

i'm really happy with the way the colour has tuned out, it is exactly what i was hoping for - not too loud but still a bit different from the norm with a great period 70's feel to it.

also got the wheel back from being refurbish. not quite the original look but looking good given the options here.

Looks great Mark. I cant tell from the photo if you have done this or not with your wheels. If you want to get the original anodise look, apply a clear coat with a 2% or 3% dulling agent over the wheels, just had mine done and they look very close to original. Also makes for easy cleaning, no more polishing and stops oxidisation. Any good body shop or wheel resto can do this. Good luck with the car.

have been very slack in keeping this updated, but a lot has happened.

car finally out on the road having passed it's inspection, still not quite finished but certainly getting there.

still have alot of interior bits to do - door cards, proper seats to find, speedo to repair etc

after running it for a couple of thousand miles, went back in for an oil change and checking of head studs etc then onto the dyno for some tuning.

some scary looking headers whilst we sorted out the tuning

but a good result in the end, 375.6bhp and 351lb/ft. very please with the results even if i was hoping for a little more torque.

drives great, very responsive and useable power

Wow - cool project. Nicely done. I noticed at one point you had the intercooler tail on the car (like when the car was taken down to bare metal) - but now back to no intercooler type tail. So did the car make 375hp with no intercooler? Or did I miss something?

Great car-

hi brandon. thanks for the kind comments.

yes, i had the 3.3 tea tray during restoration but all the the while i was looking for a 3.0 whale tail.

the car does have an intercooler, it has a low profile one that sits underneath the original tail, i sourced the cores kit from turbokraft and we fabricated the brackets and pipework and fitted it locally. pig of a job and many, many hours went into and the intercooler is too far forward in the engine bay to be really efficient, but it does the job.

Ah very cool. Nice work. Yes not optimal placement but better than nothing and accomplishes the goal of looking like what it is - a '76.

sorry Gents i really have been rather sh#te at keeping this thread up to date, i didn't realise i'd left out all the engine rebuild details (only the most important part!)

no, not running megasquirt anymore, couldn't get going with it so changed to motec as there's a good motec delaer here with his own rolling road.

on top of the a full gearbox rebuild and the addition of the custom turbokraft intercooler the following engine work was carried out:

replacement original 3.0 crankshaft
JE 3.2 pistons & barrels
piston rings & circlips
964 cams
996 turbo oil pump
reconditioned rockers
cam carrier oil feed tube
fan impellor
new clutch
timing chains
idler sprocket
crankcase gasket kit
rod bushing set
main bushing set
sump plate
cyl head gasket set
cam chain sprocket
crankshaft pulley
splash valve
964 intake valves
930 sodium cooled exhaust valves
valve guides
flywheel bolts
conrod bolts
intergear shaft thrust bearing
intergear bearing
valve adjusting screws
conrod nuts
oil press switch
chain tensioner feed piipes
oil sump shaft
oil pressure tansmitter
suction hose oil tank - oil cooler
clubsport engine mounts
piston squirters
boattailed crankcase
cam squiters
Motec M600 with 550cc injectors and audi individual coil packs
K72 HFS turbo
B&B headers without heat exchangers (it doesn't get cold here!)
Turbo Thomas 930 back box
carrera oil cooler with elephant racing fan

items in bold carried out for performance upgrade reasons, the rest service items during overhaul.

the power graph above was achieved on 98 fuel as it's freely available here and the stock 0.8 bar boost spring - i'd love to see what would happen with bigger boost but i'm just too scared!

so now it's a short stroke 3.2 turbo with a 'zero tolerance' larger turbo on EFi. revs very freely and gets boost from low down. still has turbo lag of course but it isn't too bad and can easily be factoring into driving style.
