87 930 - Can I borrow your stock exhaust? For emissions
I just purchased Bryan Boardwell 87 930 and bringing her home to CT. Thanks again Bryan, you did a great job on the car and were a pleasure to deal with. Have fun with your next project.
I have two years until the car becomes exempt from emissions, so in the meantime, does anyone have a stock exhaust setup or a catalytic converter I can borrow to get it throught CT emissions. Thanks. |

Hey TJ-
Congrats on your purchase - Bryan's car looked to be rather well sorted and tastefully done. Great to have it here in sunny CT! I'm up near UCONN in the NE corner - would love to meet up sometime, always fun meeting fellow owners. Regarding emissions, I'm in the same boat - 2more years. My car came w/ a gutted cat on OE exhaust, and I've since sold that for a RarlyL8 dual-out and am 'due' for testing. I planned on "failing out" lol, but I may have ahem 'other options'. PM / email me 8-). Again, congrats / welcome! Amazing dudes here, both in resourcefulness and coolness... |

I'm in Ashford, CT (next town over from UConn) and have a turbo flange to cat to tail pipe that got two 930's through emissions in the last few months. You are both welcome to use it. The testing station is 10 minutes from my house, so you can swap it out in my garage, test, and swap again; or you can simply pick it up, then return it. I will need it back as I am due to test again next September before I'm exempt.
Also, don't forget to register as early American, CT only requires 20 years old to do so, and your town tax assessor can only assess you at $500. My tax bill on my 87 930 was $15 this year for the full year, and there are no driving restriction on an E.A. plate, contrary to what many say. Drop me a line if either of you are interested. Great
Tom, thanks for the words... you will enjoy her I know. It looks like you guys will be all set with fletcher0780.
I supplied Tom with my stock exhaust but the catalytic converter is no longer doing it's job but all of the other stock components are there and in great shape. I like how the 930 family is always happy to help. Great news on the taxes as well. Bryan

Is the stock exhaust for the visual inspection (ala CA)? I was passing CA smog with SSI's and a DP muffler (essentially an empty car). I run the stock air pump.
3.5 twin plug, SC cams, K27, DP intercooler, etc. 400 fwhp.

No visual in CT, just a 25MPH sniffer test on non-OBD II cars.

I tried that, but you need to be at .48 co at 25 mph which I found impossible. I leaned my car so far it would barely drive and it still failed. Passed with cat though.

Fletcher0780:
Thanks for the heads up on the Early American registration, I was not aware of that. As for the exhaust, I will take you up on the offer. I'll sent you a PM for details. Thanks. |

Hey Fletcher-
Thanks again for that info on the EA reg - I think you'd mentioned that to me before and I totally forgot. Figures, I JUST mailed out my $500 tax bill for mine for the year. SUCKS. I'll run to DMV this week and do that swap fersure! So dumb of me not to listen to you last time d'oh. Thanks for the offer on the cat - very cool of you! I'll try my 'route' and if turns to be a no go I'll def take you up on that. We've discussed before getting together - maybe when TJ comes up to grab the cat would be a good time. I'm next door to you in Tolland so this is a no brainer. Always enjoy meeting other owners, great minds think alike it always seems 8-). LMK what you guys plan - could meet your place / my place, don't matter! -Paul |

1) How do you convince the DMV to issue you Early American plates on a German-made car?
2) Why do American cars get a pass but not cars of other origin? Isn't that some sort of discrimination? Congrats on your purchase of a beautiful car.

I just checked my emissions data sheet and I was .31 CO% at 25mph....hmmm (again, no cat, headers and dual out muffler)

What was your setting at idle? I dialed mine back to .2 at idle, babied it to the test station and still failed at .9 at 25MPH. Any leaner and I think I would have done some damage. |

When I worked at a place the federalized grey market Mercedes with CIS in 1982...
along with the aftermarket lambda crap we installed we leaned out the 3mm CO screw as far as posible while it would still idle, disconnected the cold start valve, and disconnected and plugged 2 or 3 injectors lines so those cylinders only pumped air and that mixed into the exhaust to help them pass. |

My idle CO% tested was 0.1%.............the drive to the station was 3-4 blocks for me.

Mine just failed the second test on Monday and as of today I am officially illegal. I think I am going to do some needed maintenance to it in hopes of getting a waiver for this year. In GA I can get a waiver if I spend $788 on emissions related repairs and still fail but I do have to improve in the area that I failed (CO too high at 25mph) or they will deny the waiver. I'm not sure what is going on with mine this year. I have passed in the past with no cat but despite adjusting the CO as low as it will go at idle I still flunked. |
