what I learned about 930 rear wheel bearing replacement

Ok finally finished the rear wheeling done... To help someone doing this in the future. Here are a few hints and suggestions..

First TAKE YOUR CONTROL ARM OFF!!! Mark the height/alignment with some spray paint , or if was dirty like mine was, just trace the rear spring plate where the arm attaches so you can align the arm perfectly when it's off.. This step saves hours!! I thought I could do it without this step but finally relented and took it off..
The article in the tech section was good but if you don't want to spend the money on the Sir Tool tool there's some cheaper ways to do it.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/930_rear_wheel_bearings/930_rear_wheel_bearings.htm

I bought a bearign splitter and a small press from Harbor Freight ( hey you can never have too many tools), and got a race driver set from Auto Zone..
Also picked up a slide hammer from JC Whitney
Now the advise,, USE LOT"S of HEAT,, with the trailing arm off, you can use a small drift , some heat , and carefully drive the races out from the back.
Either with a press, or the race driver, start the races in, they turn the old races around and use a hammer and lightly tap the races in evenly.. This will stop them from going in crooked ( ask me how I know ??) Now you can finish the job with the press/driver..
A word about heat,, I took a MAP and a propane torch and really let the trailing arm get hot.. ( after failure with it not being so hot). make sure all surfaces can boil water before you put the races ( which have been in the freezer) in.
Now use a long bolt with some washers to pull the bearings/hub together ( a worthwile $2 in vestment). Once it's in far enough finish the job with the axel /castle nut.

No doubt this is one of the biggest PIA jobs there is, but it can be done with some patience and the right tools

Is there any need to be concerned about weakening the arm with the use of heat from a torch?

I don't think so as the manual actually talks about heating it up..

...and here I thought you were gathering the tools, parts, and know-how to do it yourself! My aren't we getting spendy in our old age?!?!? Unless of course you're refering to the other time you paid someone to do it (previous rear wheel bearing replacement that you mentioned to me at the track).

I hear ya brother. I did an emergency driver side job and spent 18 hours on it. This winter is engine drop time and I will do the passenger side then.

This sounds painful

How much would a dealership charge for both sides?

Hey guys. Yes, I would have done it myself, but I had a track event coming up, and wanted to make it. Turns out, I shouldn't have bothered going because it was a complete waste of time to go to that event.

I'll have to look at the bill.

It was $90/hr shop labor, and the total bill was $2300, BUT I had other things done to the car while they had it on the rack. Alignment, pressed in new elephant racing bushings on the trailing arms, and I also had them install new front wheel bearings while they had it up... Also had the car on the alignment rack TWICE. First to get my existing alignment specs, and then a 2nd time after the wheel bearing work to reset the alignment on all 4 corners. So there are quite a few hours involved not related to the rear bearings...

So yes, the $2300 was painful... But I just didn't have time to do it....
Unfortunately....

Brian

Just thought I would bring this thread back to the top and report on current dealer pricing.

Both the rear bearings in my 930 will require replacement soon. Dealer says that from sitting in one position while in storage, the races became imprinted by the tapered rollers of the bearing. Sounds questionable, but they are loose and need to be replaced. This place charges an amazing $145/hour for labor making this tough job $3,900 for both sides! I know it is a PITA, but come on!

3900 is insane.

I paid an indy to do mine shortly after buying it in early 2008 ( and before I seriously got into DIY). I recall total parts and labor of approx. 1600.

i coughed up the cash for the tool from our sponsor after two weekends of not being able to get it apart. Had both sides finished in one weekend with the tool didn't have to take the arms off the car and didn't use any heat. this included realizing i left out a seal on the first one right after i got it together and had to redo that side before proceeding with the other side. the hardest part is driving the outer races out but if you are careful it goes OK.

that's easy,, if you weight 350 lbs you step on the wrench 1 ft out.. 200 lbs and it's 1.25 ft
