XDI Location (CDI)

Has anyone had personal success (or failure) with putting the XDI controller in the same spot as the original CDI unit?
I see lots of people putting it in the cabin, but I am trying to keep everything neat and tidy and as close to stock locations as possible.
Thanks in advance!!!

The XDI appears to be a small enough box to fit where the stock CDI fits. Why not put it there?

Here's an older post of where some of us put our MSD units, if it gives you any ideas.

Yup, that's where I had my MSD box also. Here is a pic of the proposed installation. Just wanted to make sure that the P Car brain trust didn't have any reasons for absolutely not putting it there...

For the Pelican brain trust...
Just got off the phone with electromotive. They say do NOT mount the controller in the engine compartment. It will work for awhile but heat soak will cause longevity issues that require the box to be sent back for rework.
And, the cable run from the controller to the DFU shall not be longer than 10ft. Which rules out the front trunk

mounted mine inside behind the drivers seat
the floor goes back then turns up under the rear seat .
mount it on the vertical and no one can step on it ..or under the drivers seat

I have the XDI2

the stock wire harness goes through the firewall under the rear window/drivers quarter
I mounted my 2 coil packs on the fire wall inside the engine compartment , you can run the wires through the stock rubber grommet into the engine compt.

DSP.....they are correct. We always mounted them inside. They are not able to cope with the heat and fail. Them seem to always do that when you are in the middle of traffic! As Stefan points out under the drivers seat is the best location. You can cut a hole and use a groumet and you are all set. I would also always keep a additonal pickup sensor in the glove box for when it fails. Not "if"when

Anyone have pics of where they mounted their controller boxes? I like the vertical idea, but would like to see what it looks like and if it can be covered by the carpet.

Has anyone had to grind off the bottom of the alternator housing to get the trigger wheel to fit? I am having clearance issues and am just wondering. It doesn't seem like a big deal but I would like to get a little feedback. I am thinking of ordering the wheel and sensor from Clewitt if this does not work

Yep
Had to cut a straight piece off right under the TDC mark - dont notice it unless some one points it out .

also had to cut this notch:

all unnoticeable after cleanup and re-powder coat

Sent my wheel into Clewette and had them add wheel (1991 C2 turbo)

Sweet! Thanks for the confirmation! I guess I will grind it down and just be okay with that.

I ground off about a quarter inch for my crank trigger wheel too from the fan housing.

So after much mucking around, I have tossed up my hands and submitted to the will of the god of distributorless ignition applications for P-Cars. Yup, I called Mr. Clewett this morning and told him my tale of woe. Talking to him was a breath of fresh air. Kind of like talking to RarlyL8 on the phone...
He understood exactly the mess I was in and why I was there. He didn't scold or mock me for a single second. He simply said, let's use everything we can from what you've got and go from there. Long before he had my CC number he was throwing little tricks and tips about the XDI system at me. Needless to say, he is shipping me out some of their finest trigger wheel, crank sensor and dizzy plug product so I can put this big mess back together and make everything work.
Between what Mr. Clewett was saying on the phone, and what Brian was saying in a different post, I opted to add the MAP sensor for the fuel efficiency gain at $4/gal. The tip in will just be a nice little bonus.
So between the adj WUR from RarlyL8 Motorsports and the XDI system from Clewett, this should be one helluva a fun narrowbody Carrera...
Off to build a harness in anticipation of the MAP.

P.S. The "stock" crankshaft pulley bolt is 22mm long. The "stock" crankshaft pulley is about 5mm thick where the bolt mounts. The aluminum pulleys with trigger wheels on them are about 10mm thick where the bolt mounts. If you don't go with a longer than stock crankshaft pulley bolt you will rip the threads right off of the brand new 22mm bolt you waited a week for...
