Leaking pulley/crank seal

I have a leak from the crank snout on my 2001 Turbo car (964 case). I pulled out the seal and the crank has a bit of a groove in it. Should I just replace the seal as it was or place the seal so it rides on a different area of the crank? Thanks for any ideas.

I have done this before - tho not on a P car. Should not be any different. If you have enough spare room for the seal and machined surface. What I would do in this case is make up a 1mm thick Al washer to go behind the seal - so you can be sure it seats flush. That will push the seal lip 1mm off the old groove.
Just in case it doesn't work well, or for future, the Al washer/spacer may be tricky to get out. So I would drill a couple of small holes in it and tap a 4mm thread in it. To extract later, screw in a long 4mm screw. Nothing to loose really?

If you have room, go 2mm off the old spot.

Can you get a speedi sleeve for a 996TT? I know they make them for the earlier cars.

Speedi sleeve is a good fix. If you try and leave the seal in a new place just make certain it is square. It will leak if not perfectly square … evenly pressed in. You could also pull the old mechanic trick and shorten the spring behind the lip in the seal. That has been a proven method and even recommended by Porsche at one point for the newer engines.
