Gasket Sets - Contents and Quality

What is missing from a "complete" engine gasket set that one might assume is included?

Preparing to assemble our 914-6 engine (aka 1969 911T 2.0). It is hard to tell from photos what is included, and the vendors do not list the complete contents or part numbers. I don't want to start my assembly only to find I am missing a $2 seal that will take 2 weeks to obtain from Porsche.

What might I assume is in the set, and will be sad I didn't order separately? For example, I can't tell if the following are in there:

• #8 bearing sealing ring (900-174-041-30)
• Valve cover stud aluminum washers (900-031-014-30)
• Oil pump seals (999-704-173-50)
• Oil cooler seals (999-704-172-50)

P.S. Are any of the suppliers considered superior to others? I saw an old post suggesting Wrightwood Racing might include the green Viton case through-bolt o-rings (999-701-006-40) but I haven't been able to confirm it.

I was able to partially answer my own question. In the PDF parts catalog is a listing of items meant to be included in the set. Doh!

In this instance if you find the top level part number (901 100 902 03 Gasket set Engine Gaskets Comprising) the individual parts are listed underneath along with quantities.

The examples from original question are all included.

I used a Wrightwood Racing gasket set when I rebuilt my 2.7. I highly recommend them. It was very complete and included a few extra gaskets "just in case". As I recall it did not include cylinder base shims (and that makes sense - those have to be fitted).

Thanks for sharing that. I have read good things about Wrightwood, but am not clear what makes it better. I think it includes the green Viton O-rings for the case through bolts?

Through experience, Wrightwood has found what parts work best. They package up those gaskets, O-rings, etc. as their kit, and you pay a premium for their experience, but well worth it considering how much of a hassle and waste of your time fixing oil leaks can be.

What Pete said - My gasket kit contained green o-rings, all the metal sealing rings (which were independently packaged and flawless without a scratch), and every single gasket felt/looked very good. Sometimes you look at a gasket and think 'I paid how much for this?" because it feels cheap - not so with anything that came in the Wrightwood kit. The kit was well worth the money.

But why do we need to order separate oil pump locks?
For $200-300, .15 cents should be included.

You're talking about the nut tabs? I just flatten them out and reuse mine.

I was unable to get a delivery date on Wrightwood, so I ended up buying Victor Reinz. A couple important notes:
1. If you want the green Viton throughbolt seals, you'll need to buy them separate
2. Double check the quantities! 900-031-014-30 aluminum washers are in there, but there are only 11. This makes no sense to me! It appears to me you need 68 of these to cover: valve cover studs x 34 (parts catalog calls this "Camshaft housing Lower" and it needs 11 each), Case studs x 21, Case bolt x 1, Intake manifold x 12. Argh!

I've been using the Wrightwood kits for a while now and so far, they have all come with new oil pump lock tabs.

I need copper base gaskets and aluminum sealing rings for a 3.0 build. They want $50 for the copper and $120 for the aluminum rings. Seems ridiculous to me to spend $170 on these parts when a full gasket set is $50 more. Ridiculous.

I’m with you on this one..Very expensive hobby this Porsche thing !!
