Firing Order for 87
A little confused by the description in Waynes book so I just want to confirm the firing order
1-6-2-4-3-5 on an 87 3.3 turbo, (note the book says its different for various years) and the distributer therefore moves counter clockwise? thanks in advance

I thought the firing order was the same for all years?
The distributor turns "backwards" (CCW) on an SC compared to all the other motors. -Chris

The distributors turn Counter Clock Wise for 911SCs 78 to 83 and 930 3.3 turbo from 78 to 89.
The firing order is the same for all 911 based engines. 1-6-2-4-3-5

Right - firing order is the same, distributor turns, and is wired, backwards...

Well, the firing order is 1-6-2-4-3-5. Cylinder number one will always be the one nearest the notch, and cylinder number 4 will always be 180 degrees oposite from it. However, one will go 1-6-2-4-3-5 and other will go 1-5-3-4-2-6. Clockwise vs. counter-clockwise, or backwards. I explain this on page 190. -Wayne

NO, it will stil go 1-6-2-4-3-5 as the spark plug wires are installed in that position, any other firing order would require new cams.

You guys are both right, just not very clear. I'll give it a try.
On 78-83 911 SCs & 78-89 930 the ditr. turns counter clock wise (ccw). This means you start at the number one plug wire, generally marked on the dist. with a small line and go ccw 1-6-2-4-3-5. On all other Porsche 911 dist. you start at the number one plug and go clock wise 1-6-2-4-3-5. I hope this clears things up.

BTW for this reason all camshafts can be used in principle for each engine...

Robbbyg,
Just turn the engine over by hand and see which way the rotor turns. -Andy

Anyone know why they did this? CW for some CCW for others? I only ask because I'm a collector of random facts
