Mocal thermostat - how does it work?

Getting ready to install a ebay mocal thermostat on the 914/6 projeckt, and wanted to test if it was working. Put it in boiling water, and looked through and saw a small nipple like protrusion ridse into one flow region. Does this mean it's working? I thought the mocal stats were closed on one side when cold, and opened when hot?

If the Mocal thermostat is like the OEM thermostat I think the oil is supposed to do a U turn at the thermostat when cold and then flow through to the oil cooler when warm.

Thermostat 80SC

I attempted to replace both oil lines from the thermostat to the engine cooler and oil tank. I gave it plenty of heat and PB blaster but as soon as I gave the first turn of the wrench the oil line snapped off from the thermostat, breaking off the connection. I know I have to buy a new thermostat, can I use the aftermarket (MOCAL) one that is sold by our host or do I have to stick with OEM?

Don't mean to thread highjack...Thanks for any advice!!

You REALLY should use the OEM thermostat since the MOCAL one lacks the all-important pressure relief function.

MOCAL thermostats are OK for other vehicles but I'd never use one in a 911.

And there, my friends, is the rub.

I actually have a -16AN Mocal thermostat that I didn't install-- preferring instead to use NO thermostat insofar as my Setrab 172 cooler is way up at the front of the car. . . and heed the sage advice of Dr. Ing. Weiner who sayeth, "be abso-damn-lutely certain the oil is up to temperature before you whomp on the loud pedal" (or words to that effect, this is a translation from one of our many conversations in original Deutsch)

Will this situation infect my mind, curve my spine and lose the war for the allies (George Carlin)? Who can tell? But until a convenient way to gain factory thermostat functionality, e.g. bypass of oil on low temperature AND high pressure, is produced, I simply cannot bring myself to purchase and install -16AN male to 30mm X 4 fittings on the factory job.

Carry on

Does not the Factory stat flow a small amount of oil even when closed?
