Homemade P237 Camshaft Securing Bar - Tool

Quick & easy homemade Porsche P237 camshaft tool.

All you need is a welder, a 2 1/2" length of 2" I.D. black pipe, a foot or so of 1" black pipe and 3 bolts. Picked up the materials at Home Depot.

Cut out a section of the pipe to fit past the chain tensioner:



*** Before proceeding block off the oil galley with some paper towels so you don't drop any parts into the engine***

I made some pins from some bolts I had in the garage (sorry don't know what size - something that fits reasonably snug in the sprocket holes):



Place the pipe over all 3 bolts and clamp 1 down with a needle nose vice grip:



Weld the first bolt to the pipe. Return to the cam, line up the second & weld and finally the 3rd.



Tack the short piece of 1" pipe across from the tensioner cut-out and you are done!

Cool. Show us a pic of the final assembly showing all three bolts.

I actually bought the tool with the intention of selling it after my rebuild.

Is the notch in the tube there to clear the tensioner?

Walt - you got it. Similar to the cut out on the actual P237, needed to clear the left side hydraulic chain tensioner. I positioned the parts on the left side prior to welding to ensure the pins lined up & the pipe cutout cleared the tensioner.



Green993 - I don't have a pic of the completed body handy, but it looks like the in-process one that I posted except it has 3 bolts welded in place

I have a borrowed real one here and I'm also going to copy it, unless of course I can keep it till I do my engine mid summer.
I found that VW 36hp crank dowel pins are the perfect size.

Thats much better than what I made. I gas cut a chunk of steel which was about 10mm thick. Cut in semi circle to clear the cam nut. Then drilled and welded a couple of pins in it, plus a handle. Works OK, but doesn't want to sit tight in place. Pins want to deform or slide out.
I am gonna make one of these. Not that I plan doing a head job anytime soon (fingers crossed).
Gordo - were the bolts strong enough - not deforming?

P237 is a replica, made by Sir Tools.

I just made a bushing for my P237 tool to keep the socket aligned. I used my 3d printer. The PLA material is slick on the inside and I made it with just enough clearance for the socket to spin free. I took the idea from Stomski's nice all in one tool. Since I already had the P237, and socket, it just made sense to print a bushing up. The thingiverse link has the .stl as well as the Fusion360 file as you would likely need to modify it for your specific tools.

It fits in the "nut" that holds the ball joint in place.



ATTN: ADMIN. When I search in the Porsche Parts catalog here for ball joint, I get "NO Matches".???

Got - thx. Was thinking ball joint separater.
I will post pic in a day or so for what I made for same job. Think I did same. I was able to get my impact gun on it to move the cursed nut.
