So it's okay to lock your thumbs on an F1 steering wheel?
Thumb position on the wheel

So when driving where do you put your thumbs? Do you keep them on the outside of the steering wheel or on the inside. I am asking because I am trying to break the habit of hooking my thumbs on the inside of the wheel.
The reason is the thumbs can get injured even in a minor crash, and if the airbag goes off it will push your arms aside and the injure is worse.

What I was told was for fast track driving thumbs should be hooked for maximum control...in theory, however for rallying you don't want them there for any kicks from the wheel.

Taught to have hands at 9:00 and 3:00 at BMW driving school. I believe it was also suggested not to hook thumbs due to potential to have them broken if steering wheel air bag deploys. Pretty much do this around town but tend to one hand on undemanding drives.

Learn to keep your thumbs OUT of the inside of the wheel. This is very important because hitting a curb, debris, or another vehicle, with the front tires will violently jerk the steering wheel. Broken thumbs are a common injury in off road and racing sports when thumbs are wrapped around a steering wheel.

A few years ago a Pelican forum poster broke one of his thumbs out at the track when he spun out, and posted about it.
I remember, because it changed the way I hold the steering wheel on my cars.
