Lost all the frame strength by removing the reinforcing bars and the seat post. Prolly not a Schwinn anywho, based on the head tube. Prolly a murray or worse, huffy.

Hope they had dental insurance.

Schwinn frames used a forged head tube that was arc-welded to the steal frame tubes back from the transition to make them stronger.

Other companies brazed their tubes to the head tube with butt joints.

All this vintage bike talk reminded me of a garage sale find a year or so ago. What do you think? Any ideas on how to proceed with chrome, parts etc?

Not a Schwinn like I originally thought it was at a distance, but still kinda cool.

Thumb position on the wheel
Quote:
So when driving where do you put your thumbs? Do you keep them on the outside of the steering wheel or on the inside. I am asking because I am trying to break the habit of hooking my thumbs on the inside of the wheel.

The reason is the thumbs can get injured even in a minor crash, and if the airbag goes off it will push your arms aside and the injure is worse.
Quote:
What I was told was for fast track driving thumbs should be hooked for maximum control...in theory, however for rallying you don't want them there for any kicks from the wheel.
Quote:
Taught to have hands at 9:00 and 3:00 at BMW driving school. I believe it was also suggested not to hook thumbs due to potential to have them broken if steering wheel air bag deploys. Pretty much do this around town but tend to one hand on undemanding drives.

Quote:
Learn to keep your thumbs OUT of the inside of the wheel. This is very important because hitting a curb, debris, or another vehicle, with the front tires will violently jerk the steering wheel. Broken thumbs are a common injury in off road and racing sports when thumbs are wrapped around a steering wheel.
A few years ago a Pelican forum poster broke one of his thumbs out at the track when he spun out, and posted about it.

I remember, because it changed the way I hold the steering wheel on my cars.

Sorry, I call BS. Look at all these rally drivers. Control is more important. Also, how do they suppose F1 drivers hold their steering "wheel" then?

I don't see how different thumb positions is BS, just depends if you want to keep them unbroken I suppose.

I found this old thread, supports not locking/wrapping thumbs.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/75819-how-do-you-hold-steering-wheel.html
Quote:
NEVER hook your thumbs in the wheel, it's a broken thumb waiting to happen if you do.
Quote:
I too use the 9 & 3 position (on most wheels), but I DO lock my thumbs (snug, but not a death grip) in the wheel. I find that it provides a lot better feedback, and it is a more natural position for your hand. Yes, I am fully aware of the broken-thumb-effect. However, if I'm ever in a position where contact is imminent, or realize that I have just become a "passenger", I will rapidly unhook my thumbs and remove my hands from the wheel completely a split second before impact.
Quote:
I was told to rest the pads of your thumbs on the facing surface of the wheel -- that the pads will give you the most direct feedback. Plus, you won't snap a thumb.
Quote:
Thumbs on the face of the wheel, not hooked thru (I actually learned that in fire truck driving school).
Quote:
Curious, I raced for about 6 years with the SCCA and I took Skip Barber, and I never heard a lot of discussion about hooking or not-hooking the thumbs. Based on this thread I went back and consulted my panel of World Champion F1 drivers for their inputs (Ok, I checked the pictures in their books!)

Jackie Stewart: Semi-hooked thumbs. He drives (drove?) with his thumbs opposite his index fingers. They are across the inside of the wheel rim, but just.

Nikki Lauda: Hooked Thumbs. I looked at a number of pictures and his thumbs went around the wheel rim to be resting on top of his index fingers.

Alain Prost: Hooked thumbs. Just like Nikki.
Ayrton Senna: Hooked thumbs.
They are you thumbs not mine, do as you please. If you are a F1 driver you are doing as you please already.

How to crash
ESPN The Magazine: How to crash in NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA, MotoGP
Quote:
(1) If a crash is inevitable, take your hands off the wheel to avoid injury to your thumbs or wrists. If you're still steering the car, make sure your thumb doesn't close on the wheel. Leave it resting on the top of the wheel so it doesn't get jammed in the middle when you hit something.
