If you want to disable the 'autoheat' function, there's a set screw connecting the auto heat control arm to the red handled lever. It is visible from the passenger footwell and takes all of 3 minutes to remove.
Your lever won't stay up because autoheat is telling it that you don't need that much heat.
Does your car still have the sensor bulb up by the rear view mirror by the sunroof?
