Heater Lever Won't Stay Up on 76 930
The red heater lever in my 76 930 refuses to stay up, after I pull it up to start the flow of heat. Instead it slowly drops back down. I can feel the heat flowing under the dash when I pull up the lever. Just need the lever to stay in the pulled up position! Any tips?

Hi..take your handbrake boot off and there is a nut 13mm wrench ..make it tighter that should do the trick

If you want to disable the 'autoheat' function, there's a set screw connecting the auto heat control arm to the red handled lever. It is visible from the passenger footwell and takes all of 3 minutes to remove.
Your lever won't stay up because autoheat is telling it that you don't need that much heat. Does your car still have the sensor bulb up by the rear view mirror by the sunroof? Bill K

All the US destined 930's had it.
Maybe an option in Europe? Your symptoms are the same thing I went through when I got mine.

Time to figure out what you've got in the car. Autoheat is a bit dubious, so some have removed the servos but failed to install a handbrake with manual levers.
There are also springs on the flappers in the rear under the car that might be worn out. |

Banned but not out, yet..

After the fix, if your heater lever stays up longer than four hours, consult your physician.

Hi Bill--yes it is possible that he has the not full automatic control box.Since he said..."The red heater lever in my 76 930 refuses to stay up".....still all it need it make the nut on the shaft tight...that should do it.
Ivan hmm i just looked at PET 1976 had only manual heater control....?? Last edited by proporsche; 08-14-2017 at 09:47 AM.. |

Thanks guys. I'll start by tightening the nut of course. My car is a US spec 76 930. Between the seats it has the black throttle lever on the left, which doesn't seem to do much, the red knobbed heater lever on the right and a rotary knob with variable numbered positions and DEF at the highest position. I think the function of the rotary knob is to control the speed of a fan hooked up somewhere in the heating system, but I'm not sure. The knob turns smoothly with no notch feel to it so I'm guessing it's stripped?
The red heat lever doesn't stay up regardless of which position the rotary knob is in. Last edited by 73ess; 08-14-2017 at 09:42 AM.. |

Could you please look at the red knobbed lever to see if there is a set screw for the auto control arm?
The parts diagram is not correct for the first gen turbo. The tightness of the pivot nut is not the problem.

The auto control box is in the electrical section of PET, 908-00. It is separate from the hand lever system in section 7. According to PET, a 1976-77 930 has auto control of heat. The bolt on which the brake lever is mounted also has the washers, etc, for the control levers, but there is no way to tighten them up -- that bolt has a shoulder on it. The manual system has a "no shoulder" bolt and differences in friction discs, and tightening the 13mm nut will have also tighten the control arms.

Look inside the front or passenger side access door of the box for a loose control rod that should attach between the servo motor and a ball knob on the lever.
