If the engine had been running very rich, the first thing I'd do is change the plugs(not champion), and check for spark.
If the engine starts and dies after dribbling gas into the intake, it would definitly be a fuel delivery problem.
Another thought might be sticking metering valves-some taps on the side might free them up.
