Mine's a 2004 and I rode from San Diego to San Francisco, then a month or so before removing the saddle and discovering it's for the earlier bikes, so it can definitely be used as-is. I'd say the pan winds up sitting on the lid for the tool tray and the nose butts against the tank providing support, but it's not designed to mount that way.
The "post" links I included in the ad go to a thread discussing differences. First link shows a picture of the mounting bumper widths, and the second link refers to a spacer Sargent sells (or maybe sold). I didn't pursue a spacer because I replaced the Wunderlich with a custom Corbin.
