The medicine is ivermectin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivermectin you can buy it as chewable specifically made for dogs or take a product made for other animals and administer it as a liquid.

I would take heart worm serious, even in areas not considered high risk. If you develop a good regiment with a liquid treatment, it is cheap insurance.
