potential E39 buyer's question
I am considering replacing my Rover with something a little more sporting and economical. I found a '99 528i 5 speed with around 58K. It appears to be well-serviced and in generally great shape, but I am unfamiliar with these cars, specifically their weaknesses. The guys on the Porsche side were very helpful in educating me on what to look out for when buying my '86 911. Can anyone offer up some insight? I did try a search but couldn't find anything specific. Thanks.
Todd

I am not sure if they remedied it by then, but the cooling systems on the earlier E39's were pretty weak, with a major liability being the water pump with the plastic impeller. New ones have a metal impeller, and are worth installing. Other than that, the cars are basically bulletproof with many I see lasting 200K without major issues. Don't know about the manual tranny. Good luck.

Beerguy,
Thanks for the info, it'll help me ask the seller intelligent questions. The '99's are about half way through the E39 product cycle, so hopefully they got the better water pump. Thanks again. Todd
