R1200S small oil leak
Hello,
Discovered a small about the size of a quarter spot of oil under my 07 1200 S. Nothing is obviously loose like oil cooler pipe etc. It looks like it is coming out up near where the clutch slave cylinder is located. Digging back through the archives it seems these engines were "notorious" for balance shaft seal issues. Could that be the case? I'm planning on selling the bike soon. A worst case scenario quote from the dealer was about $3600 parts and labor. But that is them replacing everything "while in there" from their experience. Bike only has 8k miles, just had new tires put on in fall 2022, I would think it would sell better being repaired. Thoughts? |

Are you sure it's not the slave cylinder leaking?

if its near the clutch slave cyl, you may want to get serious about at least pull that and doing the slave cyl, if you leave it to long it may cost you a clutch,
a leak from the balance shaft would show under the bellhousing and not near the clutch slave cyl.

Thank you all for the replies. I got over to the storage shed today and looked at the bike. Leak is definitely coming from between engine and transmission. Area around slave cylinder is dry. Didn't have tools or time to pull starter for further investigation. Leaning towards shipping it to the dealer since they are over 2hr away and offering free P&D for work over $250.

Wish I had that deal, although it must get buried in the billing somewhere...
I have a few issues with my R1200S and I don't want to just start chasing parts all over.... Quote:

They call out it is for a minimum $250 service. Which a balance shaft, balancer, all seals, clutch etc etc will definitely surpass. The bike is ridable but I know I'm on borrowed time and I swear I have felt the clutch slipping occasionally. Another dealer offered me $2500 for trade in . . . I'd rather just pay to get it fixed.

Agree - pay $3500 and have a perfectly running bike for at least 60,000 more miles, or sell it and drop $20,000 on a new one? I'd get it fixed, too.
