The New R12S

Read about it on BMW Motorrad USA website.

Yummy! I'm gonna have to find some room in my garage for this baby!

Pffft.
Just an R9T with sexier skins. If they're going to put the "S" on it, they should put the 145hp 1300 power plant IN it.
I will gladly eat these words if they have breathed on that 1200 oil/air cooled engine enough to earn the S.
The R90S and of course the R1100S were set up so that if one wished, one could rig the bike for distance travel.
This looks only good for sporty day trips and café posing. Please Motorrad, change my mind.

I agree. If it doesn't have at least a 10% bump from the standard power it doesn't qualify as an S.

Not to be compared to an R1100S
It is a pretty bike though. And a high end version of the RnineT

RnineT bikes are fine bikes (I own one) but it seems they are trying to insert this where it doesn't belong in the hierarchy of R90S R1100S R1200S...

But specs for R1200S vs this R12S

Horsepower R1200S 122 R12S 109
Torque R1200S 83 ft-lb R12S 85 ft-lb
Wet Weight 467.3 versus R12S 485

R1200S Quarter mile & top speed 11.3 sec and 149.9 mph
R12S ?? ?? top speed 134 mph

Full R1200S specs here https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/bmw/bmw-r1200s-08.html

R12S - 102hp & 85ft/lbs
R1200S - 123hp & 83 ft/lbs
R1200RS - 125 hp & 93ft/lbs

I agree that the power of the R12S isn't what many were hoping for. I know that I was expecting more. I think it's a sexy package, though.

The BMW Motorrad USA website mentions that it will have "practical luggage" (whatever that is), but the "Build Your Own" feature doesn't show it. Maybe that feature isn't fully developed yet, or maybe the luggage design hasn't been finalized. With decent luggage, I think it might make a fun solo tourer. It still has plenty of power to eat anything the R1100S can swallow and more.

BMW basically packaged bunch of R9T options, added a fairing, a unique color and called it a day. At least the Ducati splurges for an upgraded suspension in their S model offerings.

Love the look but they could have made this so much better. More power right off the bat with premium suspension and why does the US get the stupid low right side plate holder instead of the rear tail plate holder. Always hated the look of that. I had a '78 100S in red fade that was great fun until I wore it out.

I agree. I was hoping for something closer to the '07 R1200S. Maybe they'll release one in the 1250 or 1300 update

Correct. This is not an "S" in the natural progression of that model type. It is an R nineT that designers gave an r90s paint job.

A true S successor would actually have to be one step above the HP2 Sport with a boxer engine. Luggage capacity, etc.

Undeniably attractive. Rather than reminding me of my R90S, the R12S makes me think of Hinckley Triumph's first attempt to play upon their heritage - the 1998 Thunderbird Sport.
