We have a pretty good moto-community here in Union County, Dean, so maybe look on up the mountain from Blue Ridge. A little higher elevation and a little further away from Atlanta....both good attributes IMHO.

Dean, looking at light pollution maps you are very fortunate. I just started going down the telescope 'rabbit hole' but with a modest investment I think you'd find you can see virtually any celestial object you point at. If I ever plan on driving by there, I hope you don't mind but I just might remember to tote the 'not so portable' telescope with me.

Dean, as I was sleepless with jetlag early this morning I got 60 pages into your barn-build thread on that link. Friggin' remarkable project, and you deserve all the kudos you have received for having the mojo to take it on with no prior experience and do it so well, and singlehandedly. Amazing.

Thanks every one for the kind words.

Sergio, that would be great. The Milkey Way is extremely bright. The back deck of the barn is about 10' above the ground and we spend hours staring at the nite sky. You get an entirely new appreciation of shooting stars.

There is no light polution at all.

my garage is coming along. Once I get the kitchen furniture out(tile still needs to be sealed), I'll finish laying it out. All i need now is a bar fridge, to hang the bikes, and build a closet around the well.

Oh my. You breakin my heart Bill. I still find projects I could use my mill and lathe but no room. That looks like an 8 foot bed? Any juicy attachments? Quick change gears. Clean ways? Major congrats. You are one who can make it really useful.

What does a lathe like that go for Bill? I would love one of those and an end mill!

Yes it is in really nice shape, other than needing a really good cleaning. It is a 15X60. Has a few chucks, some milling vices that fit the compound, and several other accessories.
I have a little Southbend model A 9'' with 4.5 foot ways, I use at my shop. This Cincinnati was my dad's, and has been setting since he passed years ago... So getting it back up and running, and using it will help me stay connected with memories. Fits nicely on the south wall of my home garage where I used to have a bunch of lumber stacked, but i moved it out to my greenhouse which I am currently using to dry lumber I milled for my woodworking hobby. I am hoping to run across a medium sized milling machine for a good price as I still have some unused space I have seen big Bridgeports going for less than $2K.

I see them for $1500-$4,000 depending on condition.... Though this one is kinda big for most hobbiest. It is 9 feet long. You can get a nice southbend for under a grand.
There is a guy selling gear kits for the southbend to cut metric threads.

I had a JET knee mill and a South Bend Heavy 10. Had to sell them both. $5500 for the mill and $4500 for the lathe with attachments. I miss them both but didn't have the space.

I have seen nice CNC stations sell for less than that, as Manufacturing technology keeps upgrading.
