R1200S bar risers
I acquired my R1200S dream bike this summer, and I love it, but I'm not loving my 58 year old neck after 5 or 6 hours in the saddle. It has heli-bars. Any ideas how I can raise the bars a bit more? Thanks.

HELIBARS - Search Results for "r1200s"
Drill and tap the inboard ends and get a nice place for a couple mounts. http://www.gpscity.ca/ram-mount-motorcycle-handlebar-clamp-ram-b-367u.html

I have the Speigler super bike bars on my R1200S and absolutely love them. During a trip last year a rode from VA back to FL in about 4 days spending as much as 10 hours in the saddle a couple times and my wrists felt zero pain.
Before installing the new bars I could ride for less than 45 minutes before I began to feel discomfort in the city.

Spiegler is the way to go
The Helibars didn't do much for me. I'm 61.
The Spiegler set up is some work though. |

could also be body position. we've got all these pivot points: wrist, elbow, shoulder, hp, knee and ankle.
your individual proportions will dictate which one you're trying to adjust to get comfortable. step #1 is having someone else check you for proper body position. there's other areas besides bars that you can explore to ease the neck, like footpeg position and windscreen shapes (aerodynamics). to play with the footpeg ergos, try different boot positions. you probably ride with the boot under arch, right toe on brake pedal, left toe near shifter. move your feet slightly rearward so the ball under you big toe is on the footpeg. give it a few miles, then switch to putting your boots up on the cylinders (they won't melt). see how each feels. windscreens are a lot more complicated, especially for guys who are constantly changing the aeros with on/off saddlebags and passengers. really screws with the bubble. helmet styles (especially the eyeport placement) and helmet weight are also contributors. there are a couple of helmets that i can't see out of, because i can't tip my head upward far enough to see downroad through the eyeport. one is an agv, the other i think is an hjc. the eyeport is too low and i'm always looking "up". cheapest possible solution: better neck muscles and more defined riding position. whenever i stop riding for a couple weeks i get sore neck muscles for a few days until they're whipped back into shape.

...well O.K., I'm gonna change my new old adage then to:
"old age isn't for pussies" sounds better, more biker-like.

Also, I installed an Ilmberger nose panel which has a slightly different shape than the stock screen. My hand levers just touch the fairing at full lock and it is not much of an issue.

Spiegler
The Spiegler set up is very comfortable and I think the best. It's some work to put on.
I have a stock nose piece and I had no problem with the bars clearing at full lock on my bike. I did fiddle with the rotation of the bars. the kit comes with some glue on stops to slightly limit travel. They weren't necessary on my bike with the handlebar angle I liked. using glue to hold the stops on did not look very promising but since I didn't use them, I didn't look at alternative methods. Spielger must think they are needed on some bikes. On my kit, I had to drill and tap a hole for the heated grips. I saw the other day that Spiegler seems to have a fixture to make that much easier but I did mine without it not knowing about it at the time. Also be prepared to put a torch or a heat gun on the bolt holding the upper triple clamp on. It's big and it has red loctite on it. I also made up a new clutch line although I'm not sure I needed to. I was doing up new lines for the HP2 brakes and I wanted them all to match. So the stock one might have worked fine. |

I purchased both the carbon fiber belly pan and the HPE-Tubi style exhaust directly from ilmberger in Europe. I am on business travel at the moment but can send you contact details if you are interested after I get home this weekend.
I also purchased an ilmberger nose panel with an MRA bubble screen and like it a lot better than the flimsy factory setup. |

Ilmberger doesn't have the HPE stuff anymore. They sold them all and no more production. They will still make a belly pan for you.
Sandbar will do an exhaust but get your pocket book out.
