Boxster 986 Drive train strange noise
Hello, I will appreciate any help on this issue I have on my 986 Boxster. Here is the story.
I recently bought a preowned Boxster 2003 2.7 5 speed with 15,000 miles from an authorized dealer. After driving it for about 200 miles I noticed a strange noise coming from the rear left wheel. I then checked the tire and brake assembly finding nothing was wrong. I suspect the noise might be coming from the wheel bearing. The sound starts squeaking and whistleing at 15mph and increases with speed. It is not the common knocking sound of a CV joint, nor the hawling of a worn out bearing. It seems more like a high pitch whistle. I ran the car in neutral, with clutch engaged and disengaded, with the engine running and with the engine off, braking softly, braking hard. The sound is still there as long as the car is moving above 15mph and does not change with driving conditions. I decided to take it to the dealer. They diagnosed a faulty drive shaft. The solution: replace the drive shaft assembly with CV joints. The parts have not arrived yet so my car is seating on the dealer shop. I'm not sure ir the diagnostic is correct. Does anybody have had an issue like this? Thanks for your comments. |

This may not be applicable to a 2003 but my '98 had the sound of a tyre rub or wheel bearing that showed up on hard left turns. Increased with speed, but increased with engine RPM and clutch in. Turned out to be the front engine mount (after replacing both front and rear wheel bearings). Take off the inside cover and look down at it. there should be plastic spacers on both sides of the frame mount.

Hello. Thanks for de idea DMadigan. I’ll check eventhough I don’t relate the sound to engine vibration or engine speed. The noise is there even with the engine off. I tested it running downhill with the engine off. The noise seems like there is weired bird inside.
I uploaded a video at this link. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9M7c13Be6h1LjmwsLlV0uQPu30nlcOLUnqE2M0/?igshid=i2evpmh8oxab |

Hello. Problem fixed. For anyone that might have this same issue. Here is the solution.
Not surprisingly the dealer diagnostic was NOT correct. This weekened I decided to replace the wheel bearing, as I already bought it before taking the car to the dealer. Problem solved with and SKF aftermarket bearing for which I paid $12 dollars, instead of having to replace the axle/CV joints assembly for more than $1,000 dollars. What I really regret is that a certified dealer does not know the car better than me, a novice Porsche mechanic. Shame. Thanks for reading, I hope this comments help someone else. |

Yes, the sealed bearing. I installed SKF GRW231M, Perfect Fit, no problem at all.
I did it off the Car. Removed brakes and disconnected tie rods and suspension as needed to remove wheel hub. Then removed the old one and installed new one using an hidraulic press. No hammering involved, as all are aluminium parts, careful with that. Good luck! |
