Engine repair help
So I purchased a 05 S from a lady who was selling her sons estate. I got little info on why the car was parked. I got it home and tried starting it up today. Instantly white smoke poured from the exhaust, and alot of it. I shut the engine off immediately. I’ve been reading on here and other places on the internet, and the common problem seems to be the cylinder heads crack. Maybe it’s a head gasket? (Very unlikely I know!)
I have a few projects going on at the moment, but I’d like to dig into this one also, my wife’s eager to have her own toy to run around in. I’m going to have to shuffle a garage spot between this and the wife’s daily. So I’d like to keep this as a roller. My question, can I drop the engine with the trans, and keep the car as a roller? I can easily pull it in and out with a truck or tractor. That would make my life much easier as I can still pull my 944 to finish and the wife’s daily for the night. I was also considering pulling the heads with the engine in the car, but I would be much better off dropping the complete engine and going over it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

I forgot to add, I plan to do a compression/leak down test before I take anything apart.

I came across some info saying the air/oil separator is a common problem and could cause smoke in the exhaust. So I rented a coolant system pressure tester today and tried a few things.
First test, cold. Pressurized the tank to 13-14psi, after a few min it dropped to 11-12 psi and held that for 10 + minutes. I pulled the hoses from the air/oil separator, capped the hose to the intake and fired it up. Less smoke at first, but it still smoked and when I would rev it the smoke got much worse like before. I connected the hoses for the separator and fired it back up. It continued to smoke. I pulled the oil fill cap, and it clearly had vacuum against it because it took effort to remove. After it was off the car stumbled and stalled. Fired it back up and pulled the cap again, I could put my hand on the tube before it would stall to keep it running. Pulled the seperator hose, plugged the line and fired it up again. I let it idle untill it got to operating temp, and it stayed there (175-180 deg). I pulled the cap and pressure tested the coolant system again with identical results. The V bands before the mufflers clearly have some oil soakage. With it idling and the engine cover off, smokes was coming up from the compartment. I ordered a new seperator, and I plan to do a compression/leak down test. I just wonder if the catalytic converters and mufflers are oil soaked causing this to continue. I’ll include some pictures of my finger tips after wiping the exhaust tips. |

I pulled the intake plenum and AOS. I am almost positive that’s the problem.
