Need Immediate Help!!!please :)

Hey Guys,

I'm in a little bit of a situation, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place and I'm hoping that some of you fellow Pelicans can save my behind.

Currently, I've been riding around on struts that should have been replaced over
5k miles ago, but as being my daily driver and not being able to come up with the hefty price to replace the struts... I drove on.

My car is to the point where the ride is unbearable and every pothole worries me that it will be the hole that blows a strut.

I'm not interested in paying $200+ per strut, since I am a college student and cannot really afford that type of outlay of cash for 4 new struts and the install.

I can not find any information or anything else that could take place of the OEM or Monroe/Blisten struts that cost $200+ each.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME?? Does anyone know of a different brand or a brand with a model for a different car that is a perfect substitiute for my 1997 986??? Or anything would be of great help!

1) How many miles are on your car?

2) As you've now learned, "buying" a car can be the cheap part of Porsche ownership. Recall, these were $40K plus cars when new and parts for them will never be cheap. Check out all those $3K 944s.. they are $3k because they need $2k Clutches, 1K belts/hoses/pumps etc. They go on sale the moment the parts cost more than the car.


Now then. Scan the classified and the active threads for folks who have recently upgraded their suspension. Check 986 and 996. Those are the guys who wil be looking to sell their used (cheap) parts because they no longer need them.

Short of that (and make sure they were low mileage to begin with) its time to either park the car or go into debt to get proper struts. And a re-alignment.

Well put racer, that's exactly what the other 78 viewers we probably thinking.

Another suggestion for lower cost parts would be a local recycler that allows 'remove-it-yourself'. They are usually less expensive.

I don't see a 99 cent store fix to your issue. It's going to cost a few k. At least when it's done you can move on to other things that need tending. Your just going to have to PAY catch-up.

Try used? Lots of Boxters in salvage yards. They usually guarantee the parts.

There is a range of after market struts available not necessarily any cheaper though just more durable. Best bet is to contact your local porsche club as a lot of these people will have removed theirs to replace them with upmarket ones for using their cars on tracks and the old ones will still be in very good working order as they have been removed for an upgrade not out of necessity. Basically if you cant afford $800 for new struts you might as well sell the car to someone who can and get yourself a vehicle you can afford to maintain or perhaps a scooter?
