97 boxster value
Looking at a 97 convertible with 37k miles, what are the trouble issues with a 97? seeking advice for what a good buy price would be.
Thanks, Ed

I have a 1997 with 68,000 miles for 9 years. I have not had "trouble" with the engne, just the usual stuff that is common to all years. Mine was made in January 1997. Lots of Boxsters in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I have only seen 2 older 1997s. One made in November 1996, and the other in December 1996. I know the owners of both as we have a local Boxster group.
Not that it matters but all 1997s were made in Germany. Starting with model year 1998 most of them were made in Finland by Valmet. Give us some details on that low mileage 1997. |

Car has 37k miles, manual, current owner has owned it for 4 years, asked for maintenance history and all I received was the dealer stamp page, last in for yearly maintenance in 3/03 at porsche dealer, noted top motors were replaced also....

Can't help you on price, but I also have a '97 and haven't experienced any motor related problems. My car does have low miles, roughly 35k, and the only problems have been the seat belt /air bag light 2x, failed ignition switch x2, and recently I shortened the convertible top drive cable housings. All of these issues have been covered on the various Boxster forums w/ DIY solutions.
The car you've posted looks very nice and the color is not as common as mine which is arctic silver. As for the lack of full service records, it's probable that with the low millage that the car simply wasn't serviced, and you should expect to bring things up to date. You will also hear from most, including myself that you should have a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) done by someone who is familiar with Boxsters and knows what to look for. Here is a good buyer's guide. http://mike.focke.googlepages.com/buyingorsellinga1997-2004boxster |

Check the regular places like KBB, EDMUNDS, NADA. They built these cars in such large numbers that there is no exclusivity. No reason to pay a premium for this one if, for the same money, you can find a newer one with more features (at least if they are features you want)
IIRC, 1997 were not "issued" to run 18" wheels. Not till 1998 when Porsche upgraded the suspension were 18"s "allowed", per the factory. Wholesale prices are likely in the $9-11K range. Retail should be in the $12-14K range, imho. These are not "necessary" type cars. With fall and winter approaching, prices for convertibles will drop. Wait till spring though, and you will likely pay more
