How effective...

is the rollbar in the Boxster as a daily driver? Is it proven to give rollover protection or is it there for show? Newbie question #6. In my enthusiasm to buy my Boxster in the spring of last year, I did not do the research on this. Could u enlighten me?

The Boxster roll hoops are very much structural to the car and protecting in a roll over. Now, if you track the car, you may have to add an extender so it clears a helmeted head. Maybe. But for daily driving, for sure it's good protection.

Back in '01 or '02 when PPBB was going strong, one of the members had an off-road excursion and rolled his Boxster with the top down. He was fairly tall and did get some nasty looking scalp injuries but the windshield header and roll bar combo clearly saved his life. So yeah, it's for more than 'show.'

Put the seat in your normal driving position and have someone do the broom handle test (broom handle on top of roll bar and top of wind shield) on the position of your head in relation to the top of the roll bar. It's how your measured for track driving (along with having to have seats bolted directly to the floor and 4 or 5 point harness depending on who's rules your driving under) and will tell you if you're sitting too high for the roll bar to be effective. It doesn't matter if the roll bar works in roll over protection if your head is above it.

And simulate a crash where you are hit from behind and your head whips back towards the roll bar. How does your head and the roll bar make contact if that happens?

I was @ Willow Springs racetrack 10years ago when a Honda S2000 rolled & came to rest upsidedown, driver waited about 15 minutes for help to arrive & help him out of the car & he walked away unharmed. Boxster & S2000 windshield frame & rollhoops are designed & tested to support the weight of the car.
