IMS Problems and failures
Being new to Porsche ownership and the Boxster in particular, I have a question concerning the IMS issue.
Is the Manual transmission Boxster more susceptible to IMS failure than the Tiptronic transmission? Forgive me if this has been discussed. I did search and found little about the Manual vs. Tiptronic IMS issues. Thanks for any education and experience you may provide here. John |

The IMS can, and do, fail with both manual and Tip equipped cars. Tip cars appear to statistically fail less only because they are such a small subset of the 986/987 fleet, not because they are any better or worse.
If you want more definitive information, I’d suggest contacting Jake Raby at FlatSix, he pretty much “wrote the book” on the subject of IMS failures…..

We actually had a 2001 Boxster S towed in today with a IMS tensioner ramp that was broken. One more weak link in these P.O.S. M96 engines. Its a shame that a $28.00 dollar part will cost the customer a new engine from Porsche to the tune of $16,800.00 dollars. Or he will have to roll the dice buying a used engine to put in it.
