Roof? Hood? If the top, your e-brake switch may have failed.

Emergency brake micro-switch that signals the top motors via a relay that the car is stopped and the brake applied and it is OK to open or close the top. So jiggle the e-brake handle. Possible to bypass via a relay pin bending hack. Or better yet, buy a specialized relay that always assumes you know what you are doing and doesn't require the e-brake to be engaged.

Hood is the term for Top over on the other side of the pond. It always helps to know where you are and the model year so we can help you better.

Garage
I had the same issue once. I was told to move the emergency brake handle up and down vigorously for a little bit and it worked great!

Is the ebrake light on the dash going out when you release the ebrake? Is it on at all?
