Porsche Crest Water Pump

Yep, it is pretty easy to replace yourself. You might get a couple of knuckles banged up, but those band-aids are a whole lot cheaper than what you were quoted.

You might also want to consider getting the vacuum tool used by Pedro here:
Flush Coolant System
Makes purging the air from the system very easy. +1 on the OEM pump. You'll save a ton of money doing this yourself.

A small 1/4" swivel 10mm socket makes the job easier.

Replace the serpentine belt if it's cracking. The tensioner is a 24mm nut. Yes, replace the thermostat at the same time. No you don't need the aftermarket one.

Vacuum bleeder is essential to do this right. You WILL have air in the system if you dont use it.

Is the removal of the access panel behind the back seat necessary or lifting the car up and working from underneath the car is sufficient?

I can't find instruction to remove the panel also.

You need to remove the panel behind the seats to remove the serpentine belt. It is also easier to reach a few of the top bolts on the pump from there.
