IMS nervous
my 97 boxster, had its engine, go at 145,000k,s replaced with supposed low mileage used engine, wich is now at 180,000k,s , love the car but am nervous, am thinking of going newer, 2006 maybe, what was done to 06 and up where there was fewer IMS problems? and are automatics less prone and why?

No IMS 2009 and beyond.
2005.5-2008 large single bearing less failure prone but much more expensive to replace 2000-2004 single row most prone to failure 1997-1999 dual row least prone to failure Who knows what your current engine has in it though it is probably a dual. But things that rub against things wear out. All of them. Eventually. Some sooner, some later. And while the IMS bearing wears, so do other things inside the engine. Actually, auto-trans cars are thought to fail more frequently than stick shift cars because of the way they are driven and maintained. No scientific proof of that that I know of. So you have a choice of replacing the IMS bearing, rebuilding the engine, getting a newer car, getting a new car, etc. I'll let you use the search term to see previous threads on the merits of various IMS replacement approaches. No need to rehash those arguments again here. |

That's interesting I thought I had read in a few articles that the automatics are less prone to IMS failure.

Only to the extent that there were fewer Tips and manual cars. The Tips can have an IMS failure just like the manual cars.

Mine has the auto, with 69,000. going to have mine done. Bad part 3 hr drive to garage. For the LN update , and new rear main seal, 1600.00 including parts. Thought that was a fair price. Mine is a 03 Base. Will just feel better about it.

I have a 2000S with 105,000 on it. I'll admit I'm nervous, but not to the point of having the ism replaced. I have the auto, not sure how much the upgrade would cost. But I can't see spending a couple of thousand dollars on a car that's only worth maybe 10.
If the motor goes what do rollers sell for?
