I tried to remove the pads as directed above, but they would not come out. So I removed the caliper and was able to remove the pads, but the pistons are stuck to the back of both pads. How do I get the pistons off without damaging them?

You wrote that "the pistons were stuck to the back of the pads"
Base or S model? If it's an S what I think you're seeing on the back of the pads are the shims. On the front they are two metal drum-shaped pieces connected by a thin piece of metal that fit into the pistons. On the back they are different and not attached to each other, though their function is the same. Pry them off from the back of the brake pads with a putty knife. I always replace them when doing my brakes because taking them off always mangles them a bit. Carls |
